Multiple methods confirm wetland restoration improves ecosystem services

چکیده

Global wetland loss has reduced biodiversity and ecosystem services. These declines have inspired many landholders to restore wetlands, but the success of these efforts remains unclear, in part, because quantifying services requires diverse methods. Here, we blend participatory mapping surveys, field measurements high-resolution models track from restored wetlands on private land. We ask: 1) What do people perceive wetlands? 2) modelled/field measured were enhanced through restoration? 3) How measured, modelled perceived interact? Participating mapped their restoration project shared perceptions Next, service changes using Land Use Capability Indicator (LUCI) model contrasted for each wetland. Landholders ~6.5 wetlands. For services, significantly nitrogen phosphorous retention. field-measured increased soil organic carbon by ~20%, permeability water ~27% native plant species richness ~15 species, while reducing plant-available ~23%. Correlating across methods revealed that phosphorus site age size associated with more whereas an increase was not a good proxy gains or Based gained, demonstrated multiple methods, contend can be successful as well leveraged meet management policy objectives.

Restoration of ecosystem services for environmental markets.

Ecological restoration is an activity that ideally results in the return of an ecosystem to an undisturbed state. Ecosystem services are the benefits humans derive from ecosystems. The two have been joined to support growing environmental markets with the goal of creating restoration-based credits that can be bought and sold. However, the allure of these markets may be overshadowing shortcoming...

Agricultural conservation practices and wetland ecosystem services in the wetland-rich Piedmont-Coastal Plain region

In the eastern U.S. Coastal Plain and Piedmont region, diverse inland wetlands (riverine, depressional, wet flats) have been impacted by or converted to agriculture. Farm Bill conservation practices that restore or enhance wetlands can return their ecological functions and services to the agricultural landscape. We review the extent of regional knowledge regarding the effectiveness of these con...

Genetic Diversity Enhances Restoration Success by Augmenting Ecosystem Services

Disturbance and habitat destruction due to human activities is a pervasive problem in near-shore marine ecosystems, and restoration is often used to mitigate losses. A common metric used to evaluate the success of restoration is the return of ecosystem services. Previous research has shown that biodiversity, including genetic diversity, is positively associated with the provision of ecosystem s...

Restoration of ecosystem services and biodiversity: conflicts and opportunities.

Ecological restoration is becoming regarded as a major strategy for increasing the provision of ecosystem services as well as reversing biodiversity losses. Here, we show that restoration projects can be effective in enhancing both, but that conflicts can arise, especially if single services are targeted in isolation. Furthermore, recovery of biodiversity and services can be slow and incomplete...
